What does a wine size mean?
A wine size is a two-part code: a letter from A to E for body, from lightest to fullest, and a number from 1 to 5 for fruit ripeness, from most restrained to fruitiest. D4 means full-bodied and fruity.
It is not the bottle size. 750ml, magnum and jeroboam are volumes — they tell you how much wine you are buying, not whether you will enjoy it.
Both parts are needed. A classic Bordeaux and a Barossa Shiraz can both be full-bodied, but their fruit character can be very different. The letter shows body and the number shows fruit ripeness, so the two-part code distinguishes wines that a one-dimensional light-to-full scale cannot.
